Our Favorite Rochester Blogs
While we'd like to think that DowntownRocs! is the best Rochester blog, we can’t honestly make that claim… yet. In fact, there are several outstanding Rochester blogs that cover the Flower City even better than we do.
So here is a list of…
Our 5 Favorite Rochester Blogs:
The non-profit organization behind ROC Transit Day and many other initiatives that promote transportation alternatives also supports one prolific blog. You can browse through about 400 posts dating back to 2010! More importantly, the articles are thorough and engaging, providing specific details and recommendations with the goal of building a better city for all.
Amy Hecker and Howard Decker’s thoughtful blog discusses important and interesting urban topics in general, but some of their best work is specifically about Rochester, with a particular emphasis on wonderful historical photography of our great city (this recent post about downtown's North Water Street is a great example).
This site, run by Mike Governale (also the President of Reconnect Rochester), is a veritable feast of fascinating Rochester history. Frequent contributor Matthew Denker also makes this blog a must-read for anyone who relishes Rochester’s urbanity and dreams of an even greater vision for our city. The only thing keeping this from being our favorite Rochester blog is the relative infrequency of new content. Please keep the stories coming!
Rochester boosters to the core, Jason and Stefanie Schwingle have quickly grown this blog into one of Rochester’s best (and most inclusive). If it’s happening (or happened) in the City of Rochester—particularly if it’s happening downtown—it’s probably covered in The Rochesteriat.
#5 I Heart Roc
This relative newcomer was founded by Maria Gorre, and features interviews and lists of local interest. The posts tend to be highly collaborative, such as this exhaustive list of 100 Things to Love about Rochester, which is literally the result of interviewing 100 Rochesterians.
UPDATE: It is definitely worth adding The Urban Phoenix blog to this list. Rochesterian Arian Horbovetz is quickly populating a fascinating site full of articles focused on urban renewal and urban life in cities large and small—but with a keen focus on his hometown. Check it out!
Here are some additional Rochester blogs that are worth checking out:
Lastly, the StrongTowns.com blog is a must-read for all you urban wanderers and dreamers. It is a national movement to support healthy cities, but you can read several Rochester-centric posts here.
